I started recommending things because I wanted to share fanwork I loved in a different way than just favoriting it. When I found some simple recommendation lists, I thought I could do it pretty easily. Boy, was I wrong; reccing is quite a bit of work: you have to love the stories a lot to go through the trouble of organizing them for others to find. My list soon became huge and unorganized, so I've spent a long time trying to figure out what type of recommender I am and what format I want to rec in and where I want to do that reccing—it only took me a year. I think I've finally found my place here, where I have absolute control over everything.
A little bit of specific history: I remember I found thebaconfat's rec list way back in the day. After finding hers, I started my own list on various sites throughout the years. Then she introduced me to tomomichi and through there I discovered an entire world of recommendations.
I'm big a fan of small fandoms, specifically Final Fantasy and lesser-known books. I got really bothered about there not being any solid recommendation sources for the smaller fandoms I belonged to, so I decided to put my money where my (loud) mouth was and start reccing myself. I had a special journal for it around six months, but being smaller fandoms, story production is lower and I'm sort of picky, so it became a lot of trouble keeping a completely separate journal just for recommendations. Hence this website. :)
Someone asked me recently how I decide what to recommend and it really just comes down to a few things, like good spelling, grammar, logical characterizations, and situations that don't leave me scratching my head. I'm biased like everyone else; I like quality work and I clearly like the source so material that follows directly from it— and logically—helps a whole lot. Otherwise, it's down to personal taste. :)
