Larklight recs

Larklight is the first book in a series, written by Philip Reeve and illustrated by David Wyatt. So far there have been two books:

  • Larklight
  • Starcross
  • Mothstorm (speculation)

I could say a lot of about the series but would likely vomit spoilers, and the the amazon summary for Larklight pretty much RUINS THE BOOK, so beware going there. There's the official website, which also has the first chapter for perusal. I really like kid lit, but my love for this piece of fiction has absolutely never been this immense. This series is simply all the things I love (history! pirates! adventure! romance!) placed in one book, packaged and displayed perfectly. The characters are amazing and Reeve doesn't miss a step in his story, and Wyatt brings amazing life to the characters with his art. Basically: ♥

Spoilers for Starcross. I am two months late flailing over this story, but I imagine if I link this and say "this is the most hilarious, heart-warming, hijink-filled romp of a good time you will experience in anything out Philip Reeve's canon!" it will get people to read Starcross. As that's a requirement. There's not much for me to say about it because saying anything about how awesome Myrtle is or how fantastic the side characters are and why is one giant spoiler waiting to happen. Let's just say: if there's a defintive piece of fanfiction for Starcross to read, this story would be it. ♥ (Art, Myrtle ♥ ♥, etc.)

I am so late finding this and actually, the three people that would read this and flail over it have a) already read it or b) wrote it. BUT I STILL NEED TO COMMUNICATE MY LOVE FOR IT. The source for Larklight is fabulous and lends itself well to writers being fabulous within it, birthing things like this. I mean—zombies.

Zombies.

♥ (Art, Myrtle, Jack)

As soon as you see Mem's name, you should be clicking the link. Really, it doesn't matter what it is, if she writes it, odds are it's awesome, full of characterization and situations that ring true to the spirit of the canon. Larklight has a very specific sound, too, and she captures that here. This is absolutely Art, through and through, and just makes me grin the whole way through. ♥ (Art, Ssillissa, gen)

Few people can do with romance what Philip Reeve did in Larklight. Oh wait, that's right, when Baco gets her paws on a source and writes fic for it, she churns out perfection and light and Larklight fic so good I don't know whether to bake her cupcakes for writing something so amazing or threaten to beat her down for not writing more. This little slice of fic is just amazing and touching in all the right ways! Myrtle! Jack! Art! ♥
